State-owned aluminum maker PT Indonesia Asahan Aluminium (Inalum) plans to diversify into production of electricity transmission cable from aluminum wire rod as part of strategy to further move downstream.
Inalum Finance Director Oggy Achmad Kosasih said on Thursday that feasibility study for the planned project is in progress, and hope to set up a production facility with capacity of 20,000 tons per year within two years.
He added that the product will be sold both at home and overseas. Inalum has already started diversification into aluminum alloy and billet, which is expected to start maiden production in May of this year at capacity of 60,000 tons per year.
The diversification into wire rod production forms part of five-year US$3 billion expansion program over five-year period.
