The memorandum of understanding (MoU) for the construction of the power plant was signed by Jambi's Governor Zulkifli Nurdin and Monnet Ispat's Executive Vice Chairman and Managing Director Sandeep Jajodia in Jakarta on Monday.
Under the MOU, the Indian company and PT Jambi Basarngo will jointly build a power plant in the province with a capacity of 2 x 500 megawatt, Antara news agency reported.
The construction of the power plant is expected to start in first quarter of 2009.
The companies plan to invest up to US$500 million for the construction of the coal-fired power plant. At its initial stage, the power plant is expected to be able to generate about 500 megawatt of power, which will in the later years be increased to 1000 megawatt.
The Indian company has chosen Jambi as the site for its power plant due to the large amount of coal reserves found in the province. In order to secure sufficient coal supply, the Indian company will also acquire a number of coal mining companies in the province. The report did not give details.(*)
