Indoferro to begin limited production of slag cement August

PT Indoferro, which operates a nickel pig iron (NPI) smelter in Cilegon, Banten, plans to start limited production of slag cement in August of this year as part of diversification to help cope with the current drop in nickel price, Bisnis Indonesia reported on Tuesday.
The paper quoted Jonatan Handojo, Director of Growth Steel Group, Indoferro?s parent, as saying that the company is currently in the process of shipping in a US$30 million machinery to be installed at its facility in Cilegon.
He said that in the initial phase, production capacity will be limited at 40,000 tons per year, and would gradually be raised up to 2 million tons per year in the future. The slag cement production will take advantage of slag by-products of NPI production.
Jonatan said that demand for slag cement is expected to be strong as the government accelerates the development of infrastructure facilities particularly roads and ports. (*)
