PT Indoferro, which operates a nickel pig iron (NPI) smelter in Cilegon, Banten, plans to triple slag cement production capacity to 90,000 tons per month in the second-half of next year from the current monthly rate of 30,000 tons once a new production machinery has arrived.

Jonatan Handojo, Director at Growth Steel Group, the parent of Indoferro, told Petromindo.com on Tuesday that the slag cement production, which was started last month, is expected to reach a total of 60,000 tons until end of this year.

He said that the slag cement is being sold to companies developing infrastructure facilities in the country.

Indoferro diversified into slag cement, a by-product of NPI production, to help cope with the weakening of nickel price. The company said previously it aimed to gradually increase slag cement production up to 2 million tons per year in the future.

Jonatan said that demand for slag cement is expected to be strong as the government accelerates the development of infrastructure facilities particularly roads and ports.
