Coal mining company PT Indominco Mandiri failed to show up on Monday at a meeting with local farmers in Bontang, East Kalimantan, to end land dispute, the local Radar Kaltim daily reported.
The meeting was jointly facilitated by Bontang Mayor Sofyan Hasdam, Bontang Police Chie Sudjarno, and Bontang Military Commander Lt. Col. Endro Warsito.
The paper said that Indominco did not send its management team to the meeting, because they could not make any compensation decision without the approval of shareholders, but the management informed Sofyan via phone that the company was ready to provide community development program.
Sofyan, who was deeply disappointed with the absence of Indominco Mandir management, said that community development program was an obligation of the company which could not replace the land compensation that the company must provide to the local protesting farmers.
Indominco produced 3.5 million tons of coal in 2000. (*)
