Indonesia has taken significant steps towards reducing its reliance on imported fuels and cutting carbon emissions. On October 7, 2025, President Prabowo Subianto approved a new policy requiring all gas stations in the country to provide fuel containing 10% ethanol, known as the E10 policy.
Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Bahlil Lahadalia confirmed the approval, stating that the E10 policy is part of the government’s broader strategy to strengthen Indonesia's energy security and lower emissions. “This policy will not only help reduce fuel imports but also encourage the use of greener, more environmentally friendly gasoline,” Bahlil said as quoted by the media.

State-owned oil, gas company, PT Pertamina (Pertamina), has voiced support for the initiative, highlighting the need to bolster the nation’s biofuel ecosystem. Pertamina President Director Simon Aloysius Mantiri noted that the company has already made strides toward integrating ethanol into its fuel products, such as the existing Pertamax Green 95, which contains 5% ethanol. “Next year, we plan to begin implementing the E10 policy,” Mantiri said.
Alongside the E10 policy, the government is moving forward with plans to introduce a 50% palm-oil biodiesel blend (B50). The laboratory tests for B50 were completed in August 2025, and road trials and tests on diesel-powered machinery are planned next. Indonesia intends to make B50 mandatory by 2026, aiming to further reduce fossil fuel imports and support energy independence.
