Indonesia, Denmark extend energy transition partnership for five years

Indonesia and Denmark have extended their government-to-government energy partnership for another five years, aiming to deepen cooperation on renewable energy integration, long-term energy planning and energy efficiency as Southeast Asia's largest economy accelerates its transition to cleaner energy.
Indonesia's Director General of New, Renewable Energy and Energy Conservation, Eniya Listiani Dewi, and Danish Ambassador to Indonesia Sten Frimodt Nielsen, on behalf of the Danish Energy Agency, signed the implementing agreement for the second phase of the Indonesia-Denmark Energy Partnership Programme (INDODEPP II) on Monday.
The agreement extends a partnership that began in 2015 and has operated under the INDODEPP framework since 2020.
The new phase will focus on four priority areas: long-term energy planning and regulation, integration of renewable energy into the electricity system, energy efficiency in industry and public buildings, and low-carbon development at the provincial level, the Danish Energy Agency said.
"This milestone reflects the strong partnership between Indonesia and Denmark and our shared commitment to advancing a secure, efficient and sustainable energy system," the Danish Embassy in Jakarta said in a statement.
Indonesia is seeking to expand renewable energy generation to meet rising electricity demand driven by economic growth while reducing dependence on fossil fuels.
The Danish Energy Agency said the cooperation would draw on Denmark's experience in integrating variable renewable energy into the power grid and developing long-term energy planning, while also supporting local energy planning in selected Indonesian provinces.
The partnership involves Indonesia's Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, the National Energy Council, state utility PLN and regional energy planning agencies.
The two countries have cooperated on Indonesia's energy transition since 2015, with the Danish Embassy in Jakarta coordinating activities between Danish and Indonesian institutions.
