Indonesia govt to develop 7 new airports in 2020

The government plans to develop seven new airports in 2020 as part of the government’s efforts to improve connectivity of the country’s regional areas, in particular the eastern region.

“The development of the airports aims to support the main corridor and national priority development regions,” said Deputy Head for Facilities and Infrastructure of the National Development Planning Agency (Bappenas) Kennedy Simanjuntak said Monday (24/06), as reported by detik.com.

In addition to developing new airports, the government will also increase the capacity of 48 airports across the country.

Kennedy said the seven airports are located in eastern Indonesian region. These new airports are mostly pioneering airports, which may not commercially viable as yet. The airport projects will be funded by the State Budget, with some projects could be funded jointly by the State Budget and private funds through joint development scheme.

In addition to airports upgrading, the government will also improved the condition and capacity of nine ports as well as develop one new hub port.

Furthermore, the government plans to develop 275 kilometers-length of railway, including double railway tracks, Kennedy said without providing further details.

Infrastructure developments have become the priority of the Joko Widodo government and is likely to carry on in the coming years as a move to provide strong base for future development and sustainable economic growth. (*)
