Indonesia, Italy discuss investment in renewables, EVs

Indonesia and Italy held talks on Friday to explore increased Italian investment in renewable energy, electric vehicles (EVs), and other strategic sectors, Indonesia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a statement.

Foreign Minister Sugiono met with Italian Ambassador Roberto Colamin in Jakarta, where discussions focused on strengthening bilateral economic ties. Indonesia also invited Italy to invest in agriculture and infrastructure.

“Indonesia is modernizing its fishing fleet to enhance food security and support sustainable maritime economic growth,” Sugiono said, as cited by tempo.co.

Indonesia is aiming to accelerate its green economic transformation, achieve technological independence, and strengthen strategic industries, the minister added, noting that cooperation with Italy is viewed as key to meeting those targets.

Italy is Indonesia’s third-largest trading partner in Europe. Bilateral trade between the two countries reached $3.95 billion in 2024, while Italian investment rose 46% year-on-year to $70.5 million, according to official data.

The two sides also discussed deepening defense cooperation, particularly in the procurement of defense equipment.

Colamin presented his credentials to Indonesian President Joko Widodo on May 6.
