Indonesia has been officially accepted by the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) as a full member.
The government received the information regarding the acceptance on Monday in a letter sent by the OPEC secretary general, Teguh Pamudji, Secretary of the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, told Petromindo.com.
In January 2009, Indonesia decided to freeze its OPEC membership, considering that it was no longer a big exporter and had even become a net importer. In June of this year, Indonesia applied for an observer status at the oil cartel, despite the fact it is still a net oil importer By becoming an OPEC member, Indonesia wants to build a close relation with the OPEC members to ensure crude supplies into Indonesia and open opportunities for state owned oil and gas firm PT Pertamina to explore for oil in OPEC countries.
