Indonesia has agreed to cooperate with the United States and Japan on the development of a small modular reactor (SMR) nuclear power plant in West Kalimantan, with plans to proceed to the front-end engineering and design (FEED) stage.
Under the agreement between the United States and the Republic of Indonesia, the Indonesian government will collaborate with Oregon-based NuScale Power to carry out the FEED work for the project.
Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto said state-owned utility PT PLN (Persero) and NuScale have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) and are currently conducting a feasibility study for the SMR development.

“We are opening cooperation for the development of small modular reactor (SMR) nuclear technology. Currently, PLN and the United States have established cooperation, including an MoU and a feasibility study with NuScale,” Airlangga said during a press conference on Friday (Feb. 20).
In its Electricity Supply Business Plan (RUPTL) 2025–2034, PLN has outlined plans to develop a 500-megawatt nuclear power plant, with proposed locations on Bangka Island and in West Kalimantan.
Over the longer term, Indonesia aims to develop up to 7 gigawatts (GW) of nuclear power capacity by 2040 as part of its broader energy transition strategy, supporting energy security while reducing carbon emissions.
