Indonesia Power interested to develop renewable projects in Papua

Power producer PT Indonesia Power, a subsidiary of state-owned electricity firm PT PLN, is interested to develop renewable power plants in Papua region, and is open to partnership with other investors.

This was said by Indonesia Power President Director Sripeni Inten Cahyani on Wednesday during a business forum in Jakarta held to introduce the new Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Regulation No 12/2017, which among sets a new tariff framework for renewables.

He added that the company had already sealed agreement with the PLN Papua regional office for planned renewable projects in the region.

PLN has previously developed a number of renewable power plants in Papua region. The company plans to develop more renewable projects in Papua and Papua Barat provinces including a micro hydro power plant with capacity of 14.7 MW in Papua, and 7.6 MW micro hydro power plant in Papua Barat, as well as a number of solar power plants in the two provinces.

Sripeni said that one of the tough challenges in developing power plant projects in the Papua region is regarding land acquisition as all lands there are owned by local tribes. She said that Indonesia Power is currently waiting for the support of local administration leaders to develop renewable power plants in Papua and Papua Barat.
