Electricity producer PT Indonesia Power, the unit of state power company PLN, has planned to develop a new geothermal power generation unit in West Java, Bisnis Indonesia daily reported on Thursday.

The new power project, planned to have capacity of 40 megawatts (MW), will be part of the Kamojang, West Java, geothermal power project which is owned by Indonesia Power, company senior vice president Herman Darnel Ibrahim told the newspaper recently.

The existing power project comprises three units with combined capacity of 140 MW.

Herman said his company would cooperate with state oil and gas firm Pertamina in developing the new power plant as Pertamina would supply geothermal energy to the project.

Herman did not say when the project development would start, but he disclosed that the project would require between two and three years to complete.

He said they were continuing to seek funding for the project, which could amount to US$2 million.

The planned geothermal power unit in Kamojang is among the nine similar projects to be developed in the coming years. The other projects are the Sarula power plant, Dieng Unit IV, Patuha plant, Cibuni plant, Sibayak plant, East Palembang plant, Asahan plant and Bedugul plant. (*)
