PT Indonesia Power (IP), a subsidiary of state-owned electricity firm PT PLN, plans to develop new power plants with a combined capacity of up to 3,500 MW until 2017, Kontan reported on Monday.

The paper quoted IP President Director Supangkat Iwan Santoso as saying that among of the planned projects which are ready for construction included the 2x37 MW coal-fired power plant in Kutai Kertanegara, East Kalimantan; 35 MW hydro power plant in Minahasa, North Sulawesi; 47 MW coal-fired power plant in Raja Walu; 90 MW coal-fired power plant in North Sumatra; 2x100 MW coal-fired plant in West Kalimantan, and 2x600 MW coal-fired plant in Jambi.

He said that the company may spend between Rp 15-20 trillion for the projects, about 70 percent of which to be financed by loans particularly from overseas banks. The remaining 30 percent to come from internal funds.

Supangkat said that the coal requirement for the coal-fired power plant projects will come from various sources such as from a subsidiary of Baramulti Sukses Sarana for the Kutai Kertanegara plant, which will require about 1,500 tons of coal per day.

The status of tender for the projects in West Kalimantan, North Sumatra and Jambi has now reached pre-qualification, the paper said, adding that IP is teaming up with a South Korean firm for the Rawa Walu project.

Supangkat said that IP currently operates power plants with combined capacity of 8,936 MW. (*)
