National Energy Council (DEN) is targeting that the consumption of new and renewable energy will reach 40 percent of the total energy consumption in Indonesia by 2050, a further target increase than the 25 percent set for 2025.

?In line with the policy decided in DEN plenary meeting, we will raise our renewable energy consumption target to 40 percent in 2050,? Minister for Energy and Mineral Resources and also Executive Chairman of DEN, Jero Wacik, said after holding the DEN's plenary meeting on Wednesday.

Jero Wacik noted that the role of new and renewable energy to national energy consumption will be growingly more important given the natural depletion of oil reserves.

President Yudhoyono has instructed the energy council to formulate appropriate energy policy, then highlighting the main tasks of DEN, namely, designing and formulating national energy policy; secondly, design national grand strategy for national energy programs and strategic plans; thirdly, preparing steps in addressing energy crisis and during emergency situation; and fourthly monitoring energy policy implemented by government institutions.

He said national energy policies and programs are needed to address energy problems in the short term such as high oil price, in the medium term and in long term. ?The upsurge of world oil price has an impact on national economy. We have to find the best solution by exploring all available options,? President Yudhoyono said at the DEN plenary meeting.
