Indonesia to develop 12 waste-to-energy power plants in 2019-2022

The Ministry for Energy and Mineral Resources (MEMR) said the government is targeting to develop 12 waste-to-energy power plants (PLTSa) in 12 cities in the period of 2019-2022.

Director General for New, Renewable and Energy Conservation at the MEMR F.X. Sutijastoto was quoted by Kontan as saying that in the first quarter of 2019, six municipality governments have appointed companies that will develop solar-to-energy power plants in their cities.

The Palembang city has named PT Indo Green Power to develop the PLTSa, Jakarta has named PT Jakpro and Fortum, Surakarta town in Central Java appoints PT Solo Citra Metro Plasma Power, Surabaya names PT Sumber Organik, Bekasi appoints PT Nusa Wijaya Abadi and the Denpasar town has appointed PT Indonesia Power and PT Wijaya Karya.

In addition, six cities are in the process of tendering out the developer of PLTSa, namely South Tangerang, Bandung, Semarang, Makassar and Manado.

Sutijastoto, also called Toto, added that a number of PLTSa have operated, including PLTSa Surabaya Unit-1 with installed capacity of 2 MW, while Unit 2 is expected to start operating at end of 2019 with installed capacity of 9 MW, utilizing gasification technology.

Meanwhile, Bekasi town's PLTSa Unit-1 with installed capacity of 1.5 MW is currently under trial process and the PLTSa Unit 2 is expected to start operating in second semester 2019. The Bekasi city government expects to spend US$120 million to the develop the 9-MW of PLTSa.

The Surabaya Municipality government has earlier was reported to spend US$49.86 million to develop the PLTSa, which has the capacity to process 1,500 tons of waste per day. )*)
