Indonesia plans to launch a national roadmap for transportation sector decarbonization in May 2026, Coordinating Minister for Infrastructure and Regional Development Agus Harimurti Yudhoyono said on Monday.

Speaking at the Town Hall Meeting on Transportation Decarbonization Acceleration in Jakarta, Yudhoyono said the roadmap will set out medium- and long-term strategies to reduce carbon emissions across all transportation subsectors.

Priority measures will include accelerating the drafting and enactment of regulations for the development of the Trans-Sumatra, Trans-Kalimantan, and Trans-Sulawesi railway networks. The government is also preparing a presidential regulation on the implementation of sustainable aviation fuel.

Yudhoyono said carbon offset mechanisms would be incorporated into transportation subsectors to help support national decarbonization targets.

The roadmap is expected to be presented as part of Indonesia’s materials for COP31, scheduled to be held in Turkey in November 2026.

To support the initiative, the Coordinating Ministry for Infrastructure and Regional Development has committed to four pilot projects. These include land transportation decarbonization through Bus Rapid Transit systems, electric vehicles, and biofuels; railway network development across major islands; adoption of sustainable aviation fuel in aviation; and green port implementation in maritime transportation.

Yudhoyono said the roadmap is intended to strengthen coordination among ministries, government agencies, and state-owned enterprises in advancing transportation decarbonization.
