Indonesia, Verra to sign MRA for carbon credits
Thursday, October 2 2025 - 05:09 PM WIB

Ministry of Environment and Verra, a carbon certification body, will sign a Mutual Recognition Agreement (MRA) on October 3, 2025, establishing equivalence between Verra-issued carbon credits and Indonesia’s Emission Reduction Certificates (SPEI), the ministry said as quoted by ecobiz.asia.
The agreement follows lengthy negotiations and builds on previous MRAs Indonesia has signed with Gold Standard, Global Carbon Council, and Plan Vivo. While Gold Standard and GCC focus on technology-based approaches, Verra and Plan Vivo emphasize nature-based carbon projects.

Environment Minister Hanif Faisol Nurofiq noted that Verra has registered 3 million tons of carbon credits from Indonesian forestry projects, with an additional 15 million tons pending issuance. The MRA aims to support Indonesia’s voluntary carbon market by ensuring high-quality, verifiable credits and establishing international recognition.
Hanif said Indonesia’s forest carbon credits merit a premium due to the country’s high biodiversity, which he contrasted with Europe’s limited tree species. The minister also urged local carbon project developers to maintain integrity and avoid fraudulent certificates to preserve market value.
The MRA signing is scheduled during the Ecosystem Restoration Forum on Peatland and Mangroves in Jakarta.
