Inpex to drill appraisal, exploration wells in Masela next year

Japan energy firm Inpex Corporation, the operator of gas-rich Masela block in the Arafura Sea south of Papua, announced its plans to begin drilling in two or three appraisal wells and one exploration well next year.

Inpex said in a company presentation the drilling may commence as early as the second quarter of next year. At present Inpex is carrying our preparations for front-end engineering and design (FEED), with a view to starting it in the latter half of 2012.

Inpex and partners are embarking on one of the country?s massive gas projects. According to upstream authority BPMIGAS estimates, the Masela block has a total gas reserve of 6.05 trillion cubic feet.

Last year, Inpex also received an approval from the government to build a floating LNG train to process gas from the block.
