Interex expects to start E. Kalimantan coal production mid 2004

Mining company PT Interex Sacra Raya expected to start its coal production in Pasir Regency, East Kalimantan, in mid 2004.

?Our feasibility studies have been approved by the directorate general mining and geology. At least we will need six months to conduct environmental impact assessment, and another six months to construct mining facilities,? company?s staff Hendrik Lalogirot told Petromindo.Com Tuesday.

Interex?s concession area is located in boundary of East Kalimantan and South Kalimantan provinces. Based on the feasibility studies, the coalmine contains sub- bituminous coal reserves of around 60 million tons with calorific value range from 6,500 ? 7,500 kcal/kg. The company's coal concession is bordered with Kideco Jaya Agung's coalmine.

According to Hendrik, the current activities were concentrated at a 200-hectare block area in Muara Komam, Pasir Regency. Coal reserves in South Kalimantan side are located in the area that was declared protected forest, where open pit mining is prohibited. Hendrik said the company decided to cancel plan to exploit the reserves.

Hendrik said Interex planned to produce around 200,000 tons by the end of 2004. ?We projected production capacity will increase up to 1.5 million tons in 2005.?

He also said the company had signed coal supply agreements with Sumitomo of Japan and Sam Tan Co. Ltd of South Korea.

According government?s data the company is granted the third generation coal contract of work (CCoW) in 1997. The company is owned by Indonesian individuals. (robert)
