State-owned electricity firm PT PLN said that five new biomass-based power plant projects each with capacity of 10 MW in North Sulawesi, Central Sulawesi and Gorontalo provinces (Suluttenggo region) have been proposed by independent power producers (IPPs).

Baringin Nababan, General Manager for PLN?s Suluttenggo region, said to Petromindo.com on Wednesday that the company had signed MoUs with the IPPs for the planned renewable projects, but have yet to sign the power purchase agreements (PPAs).

He added that PLN had received last week the feasibility study for the planned projects from the IPPs.

Baringin said that the PPAs for the planned projects were expected to be signed later this year. He did not provide further details.

PLN on Wednesday signed PPAs with 53 IPPs for the development of small-scale (less than 10 MW) renewable power plant projects including micro hydro, biomass, and solar with combined capacity of around 400 MW as the company seeks to bolster renewables energy development in a bid to help increase power supply in remote regions and to realize the government?s target for renewables to account for up to 23 percent of the country?s energy mix by 2025.
