Italy?s ENI awarded Makassar Strait exploration block

Government will award Muara Bakau exploration block in Makassar Strait, offshore East Kalimantan to Italian oil company ENI, a senior government official said.
?The block is the only one awarded out of the 17 exploration blocks offered in 2002,? said the official.
The official said actually there were two blocks that attracted bidders but one was ?disqualified? for undisclosed reasons.
The official said the contract would likely be awarded in December 31.
Makassar Strait is one of the hottest offshore exploration area following Unocal?s successes to find significant oil and gas reserves in the area.
25 new blocks will be offered for first round tender in 2003.(alex)
