PT Indonesia Weda Bay Industrial Park (IWIP) said on Saturday it is accelerating the use of renewable energy at its nickel-processing industrial zone in North Maluku as part of efforts to curb emissions and support the country’s long-term climate targets.

IWIP plans to develop a $2 billion renewable-energy project that includes a 2-gigawatt (GW) solar power plant and a 500-megawatt (MW) wind facility, the company said in a statement. The power plants will supply electricity to industries operating at the Weda Bay complex.

Indonesia is aiming for net-zero emissions by 2060 and to lift the share of renewables in the national energy mix to 31% by 2050 under its long-term energy plan.

“The green-energy transition is a priority for us,” IWIP director Scott Ye said, adding that the company aims to lower greenhouse gas emissions across its operations.

IWIP has also begun adopting electric vehicles for logistics and internal transport, including electric trucks and heavy equipment, to reduce emissions from on-site mobility.

The industrial park hosts mining, smelting and downstream production of nickel materials used in electric-vehicle batteries, making it one of the country’s key sites in the global EV supply chain.

IWIP said its renewable-energy and electrification measures are intended to position the Weda Bay complex as an integrated low-carbon industrial hub.
