The Jakarta administration plans to build a gas turbined power plant in preparation for the electricity crisis it estimates will hit the city in 2010, The Jakarta Post reported Thursday

The plant will be built on Damar islet in Kepulauan Seribu islands regency. It will meet 10 percent of the city?s total power demand of 4,500 megawatts (MW).

?The extra supply is important to avoid future power outages,? Nurfakih Wirawan, the governor?s assistant for development affairs, said Wednesday on the sidelines of a memorandum of understanding signing ceremony at City Hall.

The administration, state power firm PLN and state gas company PGN agreed in the MOU to cooperate in the power plant project.

The three parties involved are planning to issue a feasibility study next year and expect to see the plant built by 2009.

PGN is expected to provide gas supply of up to one billion cubic feet per day through South Sumatra-West Java (SSWJ) phase II gas pipeline which expected to operate in March next year.

The SSWJ phase II, which will connect Conoco's gas field in Grissik, South Sumatra and Muara Bekasi, West Java was now at its final stage.

?The piping system will pass Damar islet in anticipation of the power plant?s future demand,? said PGN president director WMP Simandjuntak.

The administration has been working intensively to increase power distribution in Jakarta.

Aside from the plant project, it plans to build an undersea piping system linking the island regency with the Jakarta-Madura-Bali (Jamali) power plants and providing the areas with 3 MW of electrical power.

The administration has allocated Rp 214 billion (US$23.3 million) for the system?s installation.

PLN president director Eddie Widiono said the first phase of the piping system, which will provide 1 MW of power, could be finished as early as 2008. (*)
