The Jakarta provincial government has signed a memorandum of understanding with Danantara Indonesia to accelerate the development of waste-to-energy facilities in the capital.

The agreement covers the construction of waste processing into electricity (waste-to-energy) facilities at Tanjung and Bantargebang, as part of efforts to address rising waste volumes in the city.

Governor Pramono Anung said the project aims to reduce reliance on the Bantargebang integrated waste facility, which has exceeded its capacity.

The initiative is aligned with Presidential Regulation No. 109 of 2025 on accelerating urban waste processing into energy, which provides a framework for project development and coordination between central and regional governments, state utility PLN, and private sector partners.

Coordinating Minister for Food Affairs Zulkifli Hasan said Danantara will act as a strategic partner in preparing financing schemes and selecting project developers and operators.

Jakarta currently generates around 9,120 tons of waste per day, making waste management a priority for the government.

The planned facilities are expected to form part of an integrated waste management system and support efforts to develop environmentally friendly waste processing solutions.
