PT Jakarta Propertindo (Jakpro), a property developer owned by the Jakarta administration, plans to build a combined-cycled power plant as part of its expansion from its traditional business, Kontan reported on Wednesday.

Jakpro’s president director IGK Suena said in Jakarta Tuesday that the company would invest up to US$400 million to finance the power project which will have two generation units each with a capacity of 200 megawatt.

He said that the company was still looking for the ideal location for the project somewhere in North Jakarta . “A number of areas including Marunda, Pluit and Muara Karang could become the location for the project,” he added.

According to him, the business prospect in the power sector is quite promising, given the expected sharp increase in the electricity demand in the capital within the next few years.

A number of mega projects such as the planned construction of subway and a railway track from the city to Soekarno-Hatta Airport and the ongoing monorail project would certainly require a large power supply, he said.

“Our power plant will be prioritized to provide electricity for these projects,” he said, adding that the planned power plant was expected to begin operation by 2011, in line with the operation of the city’s planned subway system. (*)
