Japanese investors to upgrade low calorie coal in E. Kalimantan

Two Japanese business giants are making preparations to apply next year their technology to improve the quality of low calorie coal in East Kalimantan, local daily Kaltim Post reported Tuesday.
The Japanese investors, Kobe Steel and Nisho Iwai, said they expected to start processing low calorie coal in coal-rich Berau regency in East Kalimantan in October of 2003, using what they called Upgrade Brown Coal (UBC) technology.
The UBC technology was developed in Japan 20 years ago.
Kobe?s and Nisho?s executives on Monday met with Berau regent Masdjuni, officials from Indonesia?s Technology Assessment and Application Agency (BPPT) and leaders of coal producer PT Berau Coal. (*)
