The Jatam mining advisory network, which consists of major non-governmental organizations in the country, has threatened to bring North Sulawesi-based gold mining company PT Newmont Minahasa Raya to the court, Investor Daily reported on Monday.
The mining advisory network said in a statement that besides being not transparent in its mine closure plan, the company has caused many environmental problems not only in its mining area but also nearby locations including the company’s submarine tailing dumping ground.
According to the organization, Newmont Minahasa, which is still preparing the closure of its gold mine area, has not made any meaningful efforts in dealing with the pollution caused by the undersea tailing ground.
The organization also charged that Newmont was not transparent in its planning related to the closure of its gold mine. The company had even refused to cover its former gold mines in the location. (*)
