Java to get more electricity supply by 2007

State electricity company PLN said on Wednesday that until 2007,Java, Bali and Madura islands will get additional 5,820 MW to keep up with increasing demand.

PLN president Eddie Widiono said additional additional capacity will be generated from nine projects, of which 2,265 MW are ongoing projects, 945 MW are committed project and the remaining 2,500 MW currently on planning stage.

Of the nine projects, two power projects, Tanjung Jati B and Cilacap coal-fired power plants are developed by independent power producers, while the rest would be developed by PLN.

"Muara Tawar II power project is currently under construction, while repowering of Muara Karang and Muara Tawar III power projects had been okayed by the government, with funding expected from JBIC. Loan agreement is expected to be signed in 2003," he said.

Eddie added that financing of Tanjung Priok power project had been given priority to receive financing from JBIC in 2003, while funding for Cilegon power project is expected to be coming from Mitsubishi.

Eddie predicted the addition will be able to meet the islands' electricity demand. (alex/godang)
