JBIC still hesitant to fund Aceh power project

Japanese Bank International Cooperation (JBIC) is still hesitant to finance the development of the 86 MW hydropower project in Peusangan area, in Central Aceh, according to an official of the local office of the state-owned electricity company PLN.
The official was quoted by the local Serambi Indonesia daily as saying that PLN and Aceh provincial administration had sent a letter to JBIC for confirmation but until March 12, the Japanese bank had yet to give its response.
In the letter, Aceh administration try to convince JBIC that the security condition in Aceh had been improving.
The power project, suspended two years ago in the wake of the country?s economic crisis, was crucial to meet future power demand in Aceh.
The official said that a team from JBIC had actually met with PLN and Aceh. At the time JBIC gave indication that it would continue the project. (*)
