JGC eyeing commercial scale of upgrading tech in 2015

Japan Gas Corporation (JGC) plans to commence commercial scale of technology to upgrade low rank coal with a capacity of 1 million tons per year by 2015.
Chairman Emeritus of JGC Group Yoshihiro Shigehisa made the statement on the planned commercial scale during the inauguration of JGC coal fuel (JCF) demonstration plant in Karawang, West Java on Thursday.
"The commercial scale will already be in reality in 2015," he said.
The demonstration plant has a capacity of 10,000 ton per year.
The JCF technology upgrades the caloric value of 2,500 kcal/kg to become between 4,000 and 4,500 kcal/kg.
With the additional of slurrification process, the upgraded coal will be mixed with water and become liquid coal that could be used as alternative fuel for power generating plants.
The company has invested some US$ 40 million for the JCF demonstration plant.
