President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) led on Thursday groundbreaking ceremony of a number of coal-fired power plant (PLTU) projects in Banten Province, namely PLTU Jawa 7, and PLTU Jawa 9 &10 with combined capacity of 4,000 MW.
Accompanied by Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Ignasius Jonan, Jokowi also officiated the operation of a new 660 MW PLTU in Banten Province, and visited a coal terminal project also located in the province.
According to a government statement, PLTU Jawa 7 with capacity of 2x1,000 MW will start operation in 2020, of which the first unit in April and the second in October.
Electricity from the estimated US$1.88 billion power plant will be sold to PLN under a 25-year contract at a tariff of 4.21 US cents per kWh. The project is being developed under a build, own, operate and transfer (BOOT) scheme. The power plant will utilize the ultra-super critical boiler, an efficient and environmental-friendly technology, using low rank calorie (4,400-4,600 kcal/kg ash received).
PLTU Jawa 9&10 project with capacity of 2x1,000 MW, located near the PLTU Suralaya unit 1-8 in Banten is targeted to start operation in 2022. Development of the estimated $3 billion project has been assigned to PT Indonesia Power, a subsidiary of state-owned electricity firm PT PLN. Electricity from the power plant, which will also utilize the ultra-super critical technology, will be sold to PLN for 25 years. Electricity production cost of the project is estimated at 5.1 US cents per kWh.
Meanwhile, the 660 MW PLTU Banten is developed by independent power producer PT Lestari Banten Energi, and has started operation since Mach of this year. The $990 million power plant also utilizes the ultra-supercritical technology, and the electricity is sold to PLN under a 25-year contract with tariff of 5.99 US cents per kWh.
The Banten coal terminal project, with a capacity of 20 million tons, is being developed by PLN subsidiary PT PLN Batubara in cooperation with Gama Corp. The estimated $145 million project is located near the PLTU Jawa 7, and is targeted to start operation in 2020.
