The Cirebon, West Java, chapter of the Indonesian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (Kadin Cirebon) opposed a plan by the Cirebon mayoralty administration to shut down the coal loading and unloading activities at the Cirebon port as such a move would disrupt coal supply to industries in West Java, Bisnis Indonesia reported on Friday.

The paper quoted Head of Kadin Cirebon as saying that Yuyun Wahyu Kurnia as saying that the disruption of coal supply for textile industry and other industries will lead to the lay off of thousands of workers.

He said that a win-win solution must be sought to resolve the problem resulting from the coal loading and unloading activities at the port.

The Cirebon administration said last month it will issue a recommendation to the Ministry of Transportation to shut down the coal loading and unloading activities at the local Cirebon port due to complaint from the public of dust pollution.

This was said by Cirebon Mayor Nasrudin Azis following recommendation from the local legislative council (DPRD).

Coals from the Cirebon port are distributed to industries in West Java and Central Java. Last year, coal unloading and loading volume at the Cirebon Port reached 3.08 million tons out of total unloading and loading volume of 4.37 million tons. (*)
