State railway firm PT Kereta Api Indonesia (KAI) transported 57.52 million tons of coal in 2025, accounting for 82.4% of its total freight volume of 69.79 million tons, the company said on Monday.
The coal volume increased from 55.65 million tons in 2024, when coal made up 80.41% of KAI’s total freight of 69.20 million tons. Overall freight volume in 2025 rose 0.85% year on year from 2024 levels.
Vice President of Corporate Communication Anne Purba said coal remained KAI’s largest commodity, playing a key role in supporting electricity supply and national energy security, particularly in southern Sumatra.

In 2024, coal transport volumes rose about 9% from 51.02 million tons in 2023, driven by higher demand and optimization of coal wagons in KAI’s Palembang (Divre III) and Tanjungkarang (Divre IV) operating regions.
Besides coal, KAI also transports other commodities such as containers, fuel, fertilizer, cement clinker, plantation products, and retail goods. The company said rail-based freight continues to be relied upon for large-volume, scheduled logistics, contributing to lower road congestion and distribution costs.
