South Kalimantan-based coal miner PT Kalimantan Energi Lestari will commence its commercial production in October this year.

?We have targeted that all construction works will be finished by October and we have planned to produce around 300,000 tons by the end of 2003,? Kalimantan Energi?s project coordinator Ahmad Makmur told Petromindo.Com on Wednesday.

Ahmad said the company was currently constructing the loading facility near the River Manunggul, around 30 kilometers from mine site.

The company will use 7,000-ton barges to transport the products through the river.

Kalimantan Energi?s concession is located in Kotabaru Regency, South Kalimantan. Based on its feasibility study, the concession has a sub-bituminous coal reserve containing a calorific value of around 6,000 ? 6,500 calories per kilogram and an ash content of around 20 percent.

He said the company would also build washing facilities to reduce the ash content to between 7 ? 10 percent. It is now procuring materials for the construction of the washing facilities.

Ahmad further said aside from local traders, some buyers from China and India had shown interest in the company?s products.

Kalimantan is 60 percent owned by PT Sumber Mitra Jaya, while PT Mitra Jaya Paduan holds the remaining 40 percent, according to the government official?s data. (robert)
