The local government of the Tanah Laut regency in South Kalimantan will double the coal levy imposed on coal mining companies to Rp 2,000 per ton from Rp 1,000 at present despite protest from the mining industry, Banjarmasin Post reported on Thursday.
"The Rp 2,000 payment is fair enough, and we hope coal mining companies will support our decision," the regent H. Adriansyah.
He said that the increase in the coal levy was necessary to increase the development budget of the local government. "Compared to the levy imposed by other regencies, our rate is still quite low," he added. (*)
