IDX-listed zinc and lead mining company PT Kapuas Prima Coal Tbk said it will soon complete its lead smelter project in Central Kalimantan Province, hoping that commissioning test could start at the end of the first semester of this year.

News portal kontan.co.id quoted Kapuas Finance Director Hendra Susanto William as saying Monday that construction progress has now reached 99.28 percent.

Hendra said that the US$12 million lead smelter has a capacity to process 36,000-40,000 tons of lead concentrates per year to produce around 20,000 tons of lead bullion per year. This will be the country’s first lead smelter.

He added that the company is also currently developing a zinc smelter where construction progress has reached 26.21 percent, and is targeted to be completed at the end of 2020.

The $30 million smelter has a capacity to process around 55,000-60,000 tons of zinc concentrates to produce up to 30,000 tons per year of zinc bullion. Indonesia currently imports its entire zinc metal requirement.

Hendra said that the company may sell the output at home or export it.

This year Kapuas aims to produce 36,000 tons of zinc concentrates, down from 40,147 tons last year. The company also plans to produce 24,000 tons of lead concentrates this year, higher than 18,958 tons last year. (*)
