East Kalimantan-based coal miner PT Kartika Selabumi Mining will start commercial production in June 2003.

The construction works would be completed by April, which will be followed by a trial production, said company project manager Dadang Suratman.

He said the output from June to the end of year would reach at around 400,000 tons.

?Next year, the output is projected to double to 800,000 tons,? he told Petromindo.Com in a telephone interview last week, adding that the company?s concession area in Kutai regency, currently, contains a sub bituminous coal of around six million tons in mineable reserve.

Dadang said the company?s products would be transported from the loading port near the mining site by barges through Mahakam river to either the Balikpapan coal terminal or vessels anchored offshore the Muara Jawa or Muara Berau area, depending on buyer?s request.

He said the company had appointed PT Kalimantan Citra Bara, a Gunung Bayan group company, as the sole marketing agent for its coal products.

When contacted an official of Kalimantan Citra said it had yet to find the buyers for Kartika?s coal products.

According to the latest data released by Directorate of Geology and Mineral Resources, Kartika is 99 percent owned by giant timber company PT International Timber Corporation Indonesia. (robert)
