Kawasaki-Wika consortium awarded EPC contract for Antam?s new ferronickel plant

IDX-listed mining firm PT Aneka Tambang Tbk (Antam) announced Thursday it has awarded a Rp 3.42 trillion EPC contract for the first line of its first-phase ferronickel plant in Halmahera Timur (Haltim), North Maluku Province, to a consortium of Kawasaki Heavy Industries Ltd. and IDX-listed engineering and construction firm PT Wijaya Karya (Wika).
Antam Development Director Johan N.B. Nababan said in a statement that the Haltim ferronickel plant will increase the company?s ferronickel production capacity to 40,500-43,500 tons of nickel (TNi) from the current 27,000-30,000 TNi per year. The project is expected to start commissioning at the end of 2018, he added.
Antam said that the first line will have production capacity of 13,500 TNi per year. The plant will be equipped among others with rotary dryer with capacity of 170 tons per hour, rotary kiln with capacity of 165 tons per hour, and electric smelting furnace with capacity of 60 MW.
In relation to the required power supply, Antam has signed an MoU with IDX-listed coal miner PT Bukit Asam Tbk for the construction of a 80 MW coal-fired power plant.
