The Kazakhstan Government has expressed interest in Indonesian mining sector, saying it was ready to invest US$1 billion, a local mining businessman said.
Yusuf Merukh, who has stakes in several mining operations of the country, including the huge Batu Hijau gold mine in West Nusa Tenggara, said on Thursday the interest was expressed by Kazakhstan's Minister of Mines and Energy Bulat Uzkenov who recently visited Indonesia to inspect the country's mining sector.
He said the minister came to Indonesia on his invitation.
"I purposely went to Kazakhstan to ask him to see investment opportunities in Indonesia. As it turned out, he was interested in investing US$1 billion," Yusuf said on Thursday.
He said Kazakshtan was rich with oil and has better mining technology than Indonesia and other Asian countries. (*)
