KEL to build seven biomass power plants

PT Kepulauan Energi Lestari (KEL) will build seven biomass power plants in Kempar regency, Riau province, in cooperation with the local government to help cope with the electricity supply shortage in the regency, Riauterkini.com reported on Thursday.

The seven power plants which would use oil palm waste as its fuel will be able to generate four megawatt (MW) each.

The biomass power plants, which will be built on a two-hectare site in Kempar will be financed by an investor from Poland.

The memorandum of understanding (MOU) on the construction of the biomass power plants was signed on Friday by Kempar regent, H. Jefry Noer and president director of KEL, Daniel S. Kuswandi.

Daniel said that the power plants would need to burn as fuel about 103,000 tons a year of palm oil waste such as shells and empty fruit bunches. (*)
