Kelian Equatorial Mining (KEM), a subsidiary of Anglo-Australian mining giant Rio Tinto, has retained its 4-star safety rating for the third consecutive year following an audit conducted by National Occupational Safety Association (NOSA) Australia.
NOSA lead auditor Shah Abdul-Rahman said recently KEM had a Disabling Injury Frequency Rate of 0.47 percent and a Safety Effort Rating of 83.5 percent, which equates a four-star. The audit was undertaken from 19 to 27 November, he said.
KEM presently operates a large open pit gold mine in West Kutai, East Kalimantan, and employs around 1050 workers and 600 contractors. (*)
