East Kalimantan-based gold miner PT Kelian Equatorial Mining (KEM), a unit of world mining giant Rio Tinto, has agreed to donate Rp30 billion (US$=Rp8,860) for the development of roads and other community development projects in West Kutai Regency in East Kalimantan, local daily Banjarmasin Post reported on Friday.

KEM president director John Miller said the fund would be used among others for a 30-kilimeter road project in Linggang Bigung District in West Kutai.

KEM, 90 percent owned by Rio Tinto, has since 1992 operated a gold mine in Kelian in West Kutai.

The company will close its operations in Kelian in 2004 due to reserve depletion. (*)
