PT Kereta Kencana Bangun Perkasa, a bauxite miner, will build smelter near its mine in Tanjung Pinang, Kepulauan Riau. The smelter will process bauxite ore into alumina.
"We are considering to cooperate with other Mining Permit (IUP) holders in the concession to supply the bauxite ores for our smelter," the company advisor Ladjiman Damanik told Petromindo.com.
Ladjiman also said the company is coordinating with the local government to realize the cooperation with other IUP holders.
"We estimate the quality and quantity of bauxite ores around the concession are better than the ores in Kalimantan," he said.
Kereta Kencana owns a 179 hectares of bauxite concession in Tanjung Pinang. The company sets production target at 3 million tons this year.
As of the first half of 2013, the company has exported 1.5 million tons of bauxite ores. "Most of the ores were exported to China," he said.
