Kerinci hydroelectric plant to begin operations in March

The Kerinci Hydroelectric Power Plant (PLTA) in Jambi Province, owned by the Kalla Group, is set to begin operations earlier than originally planned. Jusuf Kalla (JK), the founder of Kalla Group and former Vice President of Indonesia, confirmed that the 480 MW capacity plant will start supplying electricity to state-owned electricity firm PT PLN in March 2025.

"This is a hydroelectric plant with a capacity of 480 MW. Hopefully, next month, it will be officially inaugurated, and its electricity will power the entire Sumatra region," said JK in a statement issued following a site visit on Sunday, January 26, as reported by Kumparan.com.

Construction of the Kerinci Hydroelectric Power Plant (PLTA) began in 2019, with an initial completion target set for November 2025. However, thanks to the hard work of the project team, the plant is now projected to be completed seven months ahead of schedule.

The Kerinci PLTA consists of four turbine generators, each with a capacity of 87.5 MW. When operating at peak load, the plant can produce up to 480 MW of power.

Owned by PT Kerinci Merangin Hydro (KMH), the Kerinci PLTA is located in Batang Merangin District, Kerinci Regency, Jambi. It is part of the Kalla Group’s energy sector initiatives.

Previously, Kalla Group has operated the 515 MW Poso Peaker Hydroelectric Power Plant in Poso Regency, Central Sulawesi, and the 90 MW Malea Hydroelectric Power Plant in Tana Toraja Regency, South Sulawesi.
