Kideco admits pollution at Kalimantan coal mine

PT Kideco Jaya Agung, a coal mine operator in East Kalimantan, has admitted that the company?s coal mine operation has caused pollution at locations near the mining site, Kaltim Pos reported on Tuesday.

Speaking to East Kalimantan Governor Suwarno during his inspection, Kideco?s management acknowledged that the coal mining operation had polluted the Sungai Biu river in the Batu Sopang regency. But the company promised to soon cope with the pollution problem.

In the inspection, the governor told the company to solve the pollution problem so that the people could again use the river for their daily needs. The governor also asked the company to carry out its community development programs properly.

Kideco, one of major coal producers in East Kalimantan, has allocated fresh cash of up to Rp 6 billion this year to finance the company?s community development programs. (*)
