Kitadin employees stage a strike at local parliament

Some 1,400 employees of coal mining firm PT Kitadin staged a demonstration on Monday at the local Kutai House of Representatives in East Kalimantan to demand a better welfare condition, the provincial Kaltim Post daily reported.

The protesting employees appealed to legislators to help force the company to fulfill their demand.

The paper said that the employees also vowed to stay at the House until a resolution had been reached.

Deputy speaker of the Kutai parliament M. Rusmin welcome the protesters to stay but said that the House could not provide logistics.

Rusmin also said that the House would try to play a mediator role to settle the dispute between the management and the employees.

He regretted that not a single Kitadin key people showed up at the parliament on Monday. (*)
