Tin mining firm PT Koba Tin, a unit of Australia's Illuka Resources Ltd., said it would produce 10,000 tons of tin this year now the threat from tin looting could be controlled.

"With security in mining areas maintained, and the resumed operation of our two mines which earlier closed, we will be able to produce 10,000 tons of tin this year," Koba Tin president Peter Jackson was quoted by the Mandiri on line as saying on Wednesday.

Koba Tin produced 10,092 tons of tin in 1999.

Industry sources had previously said Koba Tin might cut its production by 50 percent because of rampant theft of tin at its mining sites.

Jackson acknowledged the company was forced to close two of its mines in Bangka island for about two months earlier this year because of rampant looting of tin and illegal mining.

"But the two mines were fully operated again in March," he said.(*)
