Kobatin to build new tin smelting plant in Bangka

Tin mining company PT Kobatin, which is majority owned by Malaysia Smelting Corp Bhd of Malaysia, has planned to build another tin smelting plant on Bangka Island with capacity to process 8,500 tons of tin annually, Bangka Post reported on Thursday.

Currently, Kobatin operates a smelting plant in Bangka with annual capacity of 12,000 tons.

Kobatin general affairs manager Salman Abu Chari said on Tuesday the opening of the new plant was part of its long-term plans.

?We are considering to cooperate with PT Timah and others in the future,? Salman told the newspaper. Timah is a publicly listed tin mining firm and is majority owned by the Indonesian government.

Also operating in Bangka and Belitung, Timah owns a 25-percent stake in Kobatin, while Malaysia Smelting Corp. Bhd. owns the remaining 75-percent stake in the firm.

Earlier on Tuesday, Kobatin leaders held a public expose meeting in Bangka to disclose its future programs. (*)
