Japan firm Kobe Steel Ltd will start constructing in Indonesia a large demonstration plant for upgrading brown coal into higher-quality coal for power generation, the company said in a statement as quoted by agencies.
It said the plant was scheduled to start trial operations in October next year.
Kobe plans to start marketing upgraded brown coal commercially from the second quarter of 2010.
Last year, Kobe Steel and PT Arutmin Indonesia, a unit of PT Bumi Resources, signed an agreement to develop Indonesia's first plant for upgrading brown coal at a cost of US$68 million.(*)
